Nepalese New Year
Celebration of the Nepalese Calendar
In the mid April, you will be able to feast along the Nepalese and celebrate their New Year. You should tell the Nepalese: « naya barsa souba kamana ». In 2011, the New Nepalese Year started on the 14th of April.
This was the time for the families to come back together and spend a few resting days. In the large towns, this period is accompanied by some important festivals.
In the Nepalese calendar, 2011 is the year 2068 Bikram Sambat.
When there were no boundaries between India, Pakistan, Nepal and the other countries from the lower Indian continent, an important king named Bhikram lived here, and started the Nepalese calendar. Nepal is the only country that officially uses this calendar. It is only a coincidence that their calendar started 57 years before the Gregorian one.
While it doesn’t have the same importance compared to the occidental culture, the people believe that it’s good to rest during this day and enjoy live.
