Hygiene in Nepal Health and Hygiene
We are aware that the text concerning the hygiene in Nepal is very subjective and it does not represent the general evaluation of the authors, as it concerns the aspects that are important for the Occidental people.
If the morning noise can surprise the travelers at the beginning of their stay, hygiene is the next question that follows. In the villages of the Himalayas, the situation is much worse than in towns. Habits and knowledge about hygiene are proportional to the distance from the major centers. Thus, if you live a few days in a Himalayan village, you can expect a cultural shock. The villagers work the land and don’t wash as often as in the West. They wash their hands quickly and considering that water is present only in short supplies, it’s understandable that the standard of hygiene we can find in remote areas is nowhere near our Western standards.
In fact, before all, the lack of culture from some regions is the main aspect that makes the Nepalese to ignore the hygiene. Very important work is made by ONGs in order to favor a better hygiene and to diminish the diseases that can appear because of this. Washing the hands is not always done in the best conditions (when it is done).
To avoid the problems in places that you do not know, choose vegetarian dishes with fried vegetables.
In Pokhara, we suggest “Chinese Garden” which is at the beginning of Lake Side. This excellent Chinese restaurant offers succulent dishes, which are always made from fresh ingredients. We visited their kitchen and the cleanliness of the place is exemplary. Come without hesitating and take advantage of the numerous dishes!
