When to trek in Nepal

The peak trekking seasons are in the spring, from March to May and in the autumn, from September to November.

Spring walks are colorful, with wild flowers in bloom, especially the rhododendrons which color the hills red. If you are allergic, or susceptible to hay fever, you might want to try different dates. Autumns (October and November) are best for clear skies and unobstructed mountain views.

The drawback with these seasons is that this is the time when most of the tourists arrive, which results in crowded trails and crowded tea houses. There have been times when guests arriving late have had to sleep in kitchen tables for lack of rooms.

Trekking in winter is not recommended for the casual tourist, since the trails will be slippery with snow, and some of the higher passes can be closed completely. If trekking in the monsoon (Don’t do!!!), the rains make the trail wet and treacherous, and the abundant leeches make it uncomfortable. It’s absolutely a period to avoid in Nepal but especially for trekkers.
