Upper Mustang trek
Upper Mustang
Upper Mustang is a wild and difficult place, inhabited by descendants of Tibetan stock. It has only been recently opened for trekking to foreign tourists, and trekkers need special permits to visit the area. This area falls on the north of the Himalayas, closer to Tibet than to Nepal. The mountains blocking the rain clouds from the Indian peninsula, it receives very little rain. As a result, there is sparse vegetation and the topography is very unlike the southern side of the mountain. Large trekking groups must be have their own supply of food and fuel to travel in this area.
Due to the rain shadow, it is possible to trek here in the monsoon as well.
